Mathematics

The aim of Mathematics at Moorebank High School is to promote students appreciation and application of Mathematics in their everyday lives. Students are encouraged to develop their mathematical thinking, understanding, confidence, and competence in solving mathematical problems.
Mathematics is a compulsory subject for all students in NSW from Years 7-10 (Optional in Years 11-12). The Mathematics syllabus recognises that students develop mathematical skills at different rates to those in any other subject. For this reason the Mathematics course is a continuum of learning that occurs from the beginning of Primary school to the completion of Year 10.
At Moorebank High the Mathematics Faculty fully supports the spirit of the learning continuum by offering both remedial, standard and extension courses of study in Years 7 and 8. In Years 9 and 10 three separate pathways of study (5.1, 5.2, 5.3 courses) are offered to students dependant on their progress at the end of Stage 4.

Science

We live in a scientific and an ever increasingly technological society. Our students are the future generation that need to successfully engage with key issues such as alternate energy resources, biotechnology, the environment and ever emerging new technologies. They will need to have a solid understanding of Science. Critical to this is a sound grasp of scientific methodology as tool for understanding the world.
To be able to think scientifically and know how to apply this critically to challenges presented is an essential skill for students if they are to become valued and innovative citizens.
Science provides a great opportunity for students to learn through hands on practical activities and experiments. It is engaging and most of all fun!

Careers

At Moorebank High School we implement the DET School to Work Planning policy.

This means that Careers information is not taught in isolation, but that it is incorporated in all subjects and many activities across the school’s curriculum.

It doesn’t really matter where a particular skill is taught eg. research skills, once the student has learned that skill, s/he is able to apply it in other life situations.

Students are also encouraged to think about where they are now, where they’d like to end up and what they need to do to get there.  Each student needs to identify some specific achievable tasks that will help them achieve their goal - this is called their action plan.
